Council holds elections every two years, with half of the Alderman coming up for re-election each time.

Information for Voters at Launceston City Council Elections

Voting at a local council election is not compulsory. However, if you have an interest in your local municipal area and are concerned to see that your local council performs to your expectations, you are encouraged to exercise your democratic right and vote. 
 
Voting Categories: 
  • If you are a resident and already enrolled on the House of Assembly (State) electoral roll for your residential address, within the Launceston Municipal Area, you are automatically enrolled to vote for the Launceston City Council elections.
  • If you are a resident, but not eligible to be enrolled on the House of Assembly electoral roll (e.g. you may not be an Australian citizen), you may be eligible to vote in Launceston City Council elections, by enrolling on the General Manager's electoral roll. You must fill out and submit to the General Manager a Local Government Electoral Enrolment Form (PDF 62.3KB) to apply for enrolment.
  • If you are a resident of a municipal area, other than Launceston, but own or occupy property in the Launceston Municipal Area, you may be eligible to vote in the Launceston City Council Elections, by enrolling on the General Manager's electoral roll. You must fill out and submit to the General Manager a Local Government Enrolment Form (PDF 62.3KB) to apply for enrolment. 
  • A Corporate Body which owns or occupies any land in the Launceston Municipal Area is entitled to nominate one person to vote on its behalf at the council election, by applying for enrolment on the General Manager's electoral role. The Corporate Body may nominate its voting representative by completing and submitting to the General Manager a Local Government Electoral Enrolment: Corporate Body Form (PDF 65.3KB). A Corporate Body which owns or occupies multiple properties within the Launceston Municipal Area, must select one property and may only nominate one person to vote on its behalf at the council elections.

2009 Election Timetable

Notice of election to be published - Saturday 12 September
Electoral rolls close at 6.00pm - Thursday 17 September
Nomination period - 14 September - 28 September
Nominations close at 12.00pm  - Monday 28 September
Nominations announced at 12.00pm - Tuesday 29 September
Ballot material delivered to electors by post - 13-16 October
Polling period - 13-27 October
Close of poll - 10.00am Tuesday 27 October
Results released as available - 27 October - 30 October (see note)

Note: Final results may be delayed where candidate numbers are particularly large or the outcome is extremely close.
