The 'Stories in Stone' concept was developed as part of Council's It's About Us 2006 celebrations.
The first book in the series, 'Aboriginal Connections with Launceston Places', is a portrait of the Tamar's Aboriginal History. The first two chapters cover the long period until the 1940s and were written by Shayne Breen, a lecturer in Aboriginal Studies at the University of Tasmania. The rest of the book consists of edited extracts drawn from interviews with 20 Tasmanian Aboriginal people who have spent much of their lives in Launceston.
The second and third books in the Stories in Stone series are 'The Home of Sports and Manly Exercise: Places or Leisure in Launceston' and 'A Model Municipality: Places of Management Mentoring and Medicine' in Launceston both by Anne Green. They tell the stories of Launceston's places of leisure and Launceston's places of administration, communication, health and welfare, education, religion and mentoring. Anne has drawn together recollections, accounts and images from a wide variety of sources to capture the essence of what these places mean to Launceston people of the past and today.
All three publications can be purchased from the Customer Service Centre at Town Hall, Launceston Travel and Information Centre and selected bookshops.
