For more information on obtaining Australian permanent residency in Tasmania visit http://www.development.tas.gov.au/migration/index.html

If you become a permanent resident on or after 1 July 2007 and have been lawfully residing in Australia for four years immediately before applying including 12 months as a permanent resident and with absences from Australia of no more than 12 months, including no more than three months in the 12 months before applying, then you can apply for Citizenship.

If you became a permanent resident before 1 July 2007 and apply before 30 June 2010, you must have been physically present in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of two years in the five years before applying, including one year in the two years before applying.

Rules do change from time to time, so please check for up-to-date information and get your application forms from the offices of Service Tasmania and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) (external link). The contact number to find out your nearest DIAC office is 13 18 80.

DIAC will notify you in writing once your application is approved, but Council only receives notification of successful applicants on a monthly basis.
