The aims of the Living Library are to:
- Recognise and celebrate diversity
Provides minority groups with a voice that allows recognition and acceptance from the wider community
- Inform and educate community members
It dispels myths that contribute to misinformation and harmful behaviour
- Enhance perceived safety within the community
It informs people and thus reduces unnecessary fears that impact on people’s wellbeing as a way to address their safety perception
- Promote ongoing capacity building
It is an opportunity to develop Launceston capacity to generate and sustain programs that enhance and nurture a healthy, democratic and sustainable quality of life
- Foster a sense of belonging and civic pride
Through shared interest, openness and the understanding acquired through social interaction.
Tasmanians value information as a vital resource in the pursuit of prosperity, high quality of life, access to lifelong learning, informed decision making for the individual, business and the wider community, and for the development of personal and social well-being.
The project is supported by Launceston City Council, WD Booth Charitable Trust, Metro Tasmania and the Tasmania Peace Trust and the Launceston Library.
