Launceston Smoke Free Areas

As of 1 March 2011 Launceston residents will enjoy more smoke free areas.

The extension to the city's smoke free areas will include:

The Brisbane Street Mall (between Charles and St John Streets) with the respective footpaths of Charles and St John Streets as they cross the Brisbane Street Mall, being exempt from the declaration;

  • The Quadrant Mall (between Brisbane and St John Streets) with the respective footpaths of Brisbane and St John Streets as they cross the Quadrant mall, being exempt from the declaration; and
  • The two bus interchange areas in St John Street, located between York/Brisbane Streets and Brisbane/Paterson Streets respectively, with the footpaths lying immediately adjacent to the two areas, being exempt of the declaration.
  • These areas are in addition to the ban on smoking in on-street dining areas which came into effect on 1 January 2011, after the Launceston City Council resolved to strongly support the proposed State Government expansion of smoke free areas through amendments to its Public Health Act.
Smokers are advised to move away from approved on-street dining areas to ensure their smoke does not cause a nuisance to other patrons. This respects the health and wellbeing of others and ensures people can gather and eat in a smoke free environment and pre-empts the State anti-smoking legislation which will be introduced within the next 12 months.
