Road Safety Centre Rehabilitation
As you may be aware, the Road Safety Centre in South Launceston has been closed since August 2019 due to structural concerns.
It is exciting to advise that a contract has since been awarded to Zanetto Civil to carry out the rehabilitation works required to make the facility safe for public use.
The works will be completed throughout a number of different stages with stage one commencing on Monday, 16 November 2020.
Stage 1 will consist primarily of stabilisation works around the exterior of the tank. Council will also be relocating the perimeter fence, constructing a new access ramp from the carpark into the centre and upgrading the north-west portion of the carpark. A number of trees will need to be removed to make way for the works and to help preserve the structural integrity of the wall.
Stage 2 will commence next year and will see structural modifications to the retaining wall. The floor of the centre will be raised by a metre.
The third and final stage will involve design modifications to the interior layout of the centre. Input into the new design will be sought from members of the community and key stakeholders at an appropriate time.
Given the size of this project it is unlikely the Road Safety Centre will re-open to the public until 2022.
Residents will notice an increase in the number of vehicles using Lawrence Vale Road in coming months and some construction-related noise. We will do everything possible to keep these impacts to a minimum. Works will only take place on weekdays between the hours of 7am and 5pm.
We ask that you avoid the area immediately surrounding the Road Safety Centre while the work is being carried out for health and safety reasons and that you adhere to any signage erected as part of the project.
