Launceston residents are invited to share in the celebrations at the first community activation of the redeveloped Civic Square.

A special Launceston Night Market will be held on Saturday, July 14 from 4pm to 10pm, showcasing Northern Tasmania's many wonderful local producers - including food and beverages - together with a swathe of talented local musicians.

City of Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the night market event will be a great activation of the space to showcase the new features and draw the community into the space.

Red Goat Events, organisers of the Launceston Night Market have worked with Council to relocate their July and August markets to Civic Square.

"The first Launceston Night Market at Civic Square will also coincide with the final Hawthorn game in Launceston for 2018 so it all seems to be a perfect fit in what I expect will be a tremendous night of celebration and entertainment," Mayor van Zetten said.

Inspired by night markets from around the world, the Launceston Night Market looks to celebrate local food, producers and musicians from within our community.

"This won't be your traditional market - the emphasis will be more on “night” than “market”," Mayor van Zetten said.

An added focus of this July market will be the importance of song and music within our community.

Working with a range of local choirs such as Singcognotio, the Launceston Male Choir, the Evandale Village Singers and the Vox Harmony Community Choir, this market will celebrate the importance of  song and music within our community.

"The Vox Harmony Choir will lead us in a community sing which will celebrate the importance of song and music as a natural resource to bring people together," Mayor van Zetten said.

"The goal of the July activation event is to connect and celebrate our Launceston community through winter with  food, beverages, fire and song through this inclusive, joyful free event."

A feature of the market will be the inclusion of a fire pot design, which will form the centrepiece, providing both heat and light.

To coincide with and support the Pink Ribbon Hawthorn versus Brisbane Lions game at UTAS Stadium, Civic Square and Town Hall will be alight with pink.

An official opening will be held later next month.
