Authorised Officers and Identity Cards

Administration of Legislation by the City of Launceston

The City of Launceston is responsible for administering a range of laws. This includes but is not limited to laws and regulations relating to:

  • Public and environmental health;
  • Planning, building and development;
  • Infrastructure and works;
  • Environmental management;
  • Animal control.

To effectively carry out these responsibilities, many City of Launceston employees and other qualified persons are authorised to exercise specific functions and powers under the law.


Powers and Functions of Authorised Officers

Under the Local Government Act 1993 (the LGA) and other applicable legislation, authorised officers are empowered to enter land or premises, and may also perform the following tasks:

  • Conduct inspections;
  • Investigate alleged breaches of legislation;
  • Issue notices or directions;
  • Enforce compliance with the relevant Council By-Laws and legislation.

These powers are exercised with the aim of maintaining community safety, health, and amenity, and ensuring compliance with statutory obligations.


Identity Cards Issued to Authorised Officers

All individuals who are authorised under section 20A of the LGA are issued with an official identity card.

These identity cards include:

  • The authorised officer’s name;
  • A recent photograph of the authorised officer;
  • The date of issue;
  • The name and logo of the City of Launceston.

Authorised officers are required to present their identity card when exercising any functions or powers under the law.


How to Identify an Authorised Officer

If a person approaches you claiming to be an authorised officer from the City of Launceston:

  1. Ask to see their identity card – It will clearly display the officer’s name, photograph, and position.
  2. Check for the Council’s name – All official cards will display “City of Launceston”.
  3. Contact Council – If you are unsure about the identity of the officer or wish to confirm their authority, you can contact the Council directly.
