The City of Launceston's Councillors, including Mayor and Deputy Mayor, are elected by the community every four years. Our Mayor and Deputy Mayor are also elected by public vote every four years and serve for that period, but must be a Councillor to be eligible for either position.

Policy

  • Councillors must adhere to the Local Government Code of Conduct.

  • The City of Launceston's Dispute Resolution Policy is in place to support the resolution of disputes with, and between, Councillors. Matters of dispute include those under the Code of Conduct and behaviour of Councillors towards each other, Council employees and community members more broadly.

  • Expenses Councillors incur as a result of undertaking their duties of office will be reimbursed by the City of Launceston in accordance with the Councillors Expenses and Resources Policy.

  • The Record Keeping for Councillors Policy outlines how Councillors are expected to keep accurate records of activities and decisions in their role.

  • The Acceptance of Gifts and Donations by Councillors Policy defines the City of Launceston's expectations of Councillors with regard to the acceptance and disclosure of gifts and donations, and the requirements of the Chief Executive Officer to deal with the notification of such gifts and donations.

Elections

To vote in the City of Launceston elections, you must be enrolled on the state electoral roll (Tasmanian House of Assembly Roll), with an address in the Launceston municipality, or be enrolled on the General Manager's Electoral Roll for the Launceston municipal area.
