1. Understand your risk

Tasmania continues to experience bushfires, floods, and other natural disasters that have major impacts on individuals, communities, the economy and the environment.

A natural disaster can happen at any time and things can change quickly. Bushfires, floods and storms are not uncommon to Northern Tasmania and can take place at short notice. Other disasters may be rare but it's important to be aware of and plan for them.

Included in this section are a range of disasters that may occur in the City of Launceston municipality. For each type of disaster, you will find information to help you assess your risk and determine the types of emergencies you may need to plan and prepare for.

Types of disasters

Flood

A flood is a natural disaster characterised by the overflow of water onto normally dry land, often caused by heavy rainfall, snowmelt, or the breach of water containment structures, resulting in widespread flood water inundation and potential damage to homes, infrastructure, and ecosystems.

Bushfire

A bushfire, also known as a wildfire, is a destructive and uncontrolled fire that spreads rapidly through vegetation in forests, grasslands, or bush areas, often driven by dry conditions, high temperatures, and strong winds, posing significant risks to both human and natural environments.

Heatwave

A heatwave is an extended period of excessively hot weather, typically characterised by high temperatures persisting above normal levels, often accompanied by oppressive humidity, and posing health risks and potential heat-related emergencies.

Earthquake

An earthquake is a sudden and violent shaking of the Earth's surface, typically caused by the release of stress along geological fault lines, resulting in the generation of seismic waves that can cause widespread damage to structures and landscapes.

Housefire

A fire in your home can be devastating, even fatal. Once a fire starts it can spread rapidly, putting you and your loved ones at risk. While the dangers of fire are very real, there is a lot you can do to protect yourself, your family and your home.

Landslide

A landslide is a rapid and often catastrophic movement of rock, soil, and debris down a slope or hillside, triggered by factors like heavy rainfall, seismic activity, or human disturbances, posing significant dangers to people and property in its path.

Storm

Storms or thunderstorms can be unpredictable and can occur with little warning, which is why it is important to understand your risk and have a plan in place to help reduce its effects on you, your family, home and business.

Other hazards

There are a variety of other natural and manmade disasters that may impact Launceston but are more unpredictable and difficult to plan for.
