The City of Launceston manages three waste facilities in the municipality's north and north-east.

This section provides information about opening hours and acceptable items at each facility.

Launceston Waste Centre and Transfer Station

Address: Cavalry Road, Mowbray

Open: Monday - Sunday: 8am - 4.45pm
Please note all vehicles must enter the Recycle Depot before going on to the weigh bridge. 

About the facility: The Launceston Waste Centre and Transfer Station accept a range of waste material and recyclable items. 

Recyclable waste can be disposed of at no cost at the facility's Recycling depot. However, all other waste disposed of at the Launceston Waste Transfer Station will incur a fee.

Beside the facility is Uptipity, a second-hand shop open 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Sunday. Donations to Uptipity can be made at the Recycling depot in the Waste Centre.

  • Aluminium cans
  • Car batteries
  • Cardboard
  • Cooking oil
  • Polystyrene
  • Soft plastic
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fluorescent tubes and bulbs
  • Gas bottles
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Household batteries including AAs, AAAs, and button batteries
  • Magazines
  • Mixed recycling
  • Motor oil
  • Newspaper
  • Reusable goods including bric-a-brac, books, building materials, clothing, furniture and paint
  • Scrap metal
  • Steel
  • Timber
  • Triple rinsed chemical drums
  • White goods (excluding refrigerators and freezers) 
  • White paper

Other materials accepted at the Transfer Station:

  • Garbage
  • Garden waste
  • Mattresses
  • Soil and clean fill
  • Tyres

Fees: All disposal fees relating to residual waste entering landfill will have a Regional Waste Levy (RWL) amount applied. The RWL amount that has been agreed by the eight northern member councils is $5.00 per tonne (GST not applicable). This amount has been added to the disposal fees. The levy will provide an annual ongoing funding stream to enable projects that support waste minimisation and recycling programs throughout the northern region through the Northern Tasmanian Waste Management Group.

Lilydale Transfer Station

Address: Second River Road, Lilydale

Open: Sunday 12pm - 4pm

Materials accepted:

  • Aluminium, brass, lead and copper
  • Cardboard
  • Garbage
  • Garden waste
  • Mixed recycling
  • Motor oil
  • Polystyrene
  • Steel
  • Tyres

Nunamara Transfer Station

Address: Binghams Road, Nunamara

Open: Saturday 12pm - 4pm

Materials accepted:

  • Aluminium, brass, lead and copper
  • Garbage
  • Mixed recycling
  • Motor oil
  • Steel
  • Tyres

Cardboard is not accepted at Nunamara.  Normal fees apply to dispose of cardboard at Nunamara.

Waste Entry Vouchers

At the start of the new financial year (July), each resident will be provided with two waste centre vouchers for use at any time throughout the year. The voucher allows free disposable of domestic items with a load limit of 3 Tonne including vehicle weight.  Valid for City of Launceston residents only.

When visiting the Launceston Waste Centre, vouchers will need to be validated at the recycling centre prior to disposing of items - this is to unload any recyclables and reusable items

Free Tip Day Excludes:

  • Anything for burial (controlled or hazardous waste)
  • Car tyres
  • Car bodies
  • Asbestos
  • Contaminated soil
  • Mattresses
  • Refrigerators

Please note, domestic sized loads are allowed only. All other vehicles are charged as per the normal disposal fees.

Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Days

The Northern Tasmanian Waste Management Group is hosting household hazardous waste drops off days for Northern Tasmanian residents at waste transfer stations in Launceston, Exeter and Longford on the weekend of September 16 and 17.

The types of chemicals accepted include:

  • Solvents and household cleaners
  • Floor care products
  • Ammonia-based cleaners
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Poisons
  • Pool chemicals
  • Hobby chemicals
  • Acids and alkalis  <br <p="">

A chemist will be on site to test any unknown liquids.

The drop off is an unregistered service for all residents of Northern Tasmania including the Break O Day, Dorset, George Town, Launceston, Meander Valley, Northern Midlands and West Tamar areas, for domestic quantities of household chemicals.
