The City of Launceston is hosting two free skateboarding events this week as part of a new youth initiative dubbed 'Skate of Mind'.

Skate of Mind has been supported by community outreach organisation BIGhART, Tasmania Health and Future Generations Global, and will comprise two events:

● A social skating event at the Ravenswood Skate Park this Friday, December 8, between 3pm and 4pm featuring a barbecue from Launceston City Mission's SnagChat.

● A skate and scooter jam at the Royal Park Skate Park this Saturday, December 9, between 2pm and 7pm, featuring a beginner skate class, skate demos and an open skate and scooter jam.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Skate of Mind events would be a great social gathering for Launceston's skating community.

"The Skate of Mind events aim to bring youth from across Launceston together to celebrate the joy of skating and foster a sense of unity and connection within our community," Mayor Garwood said.

"The social skate at Ravenswood will be an awesome opportunity to engage with some of the pro skaters in town on Friday.

"On Saturday at Royal Park we have a full afternoon of classes, demos and an open skate event with prizes and giveaways.

"Saturday's event features a beginner skate class for those who have never skated before, as well as a mentoring session for intermediate skaters and a skate demo from Totem & Element skaters.

"These are going to be really fun events, so I encourage skaters, scooter'ers and BMX riders to get on board.

"Not only will there be opportunity to watch and learn from some pro skaters, but the Launceston skate community will also have a chance to show off their skills and express themselves through their art both on and off the board. Plus, free giveaways are always a winner."
