The City of Launceston is preparing for an unforgettable Christmas season, with a vibrant lineup of festive events and activities set to bring joy to Launnie residents and visitors alike.

Preparations are in full swing, promising some great family activities and celebrations for Northern Tasmanians.

Deck the Malls art competition breaks records

The festive spirit is already captivating young hearts across Northern Tasmania, with the City of Launceston's Deck the Malls art competition receiving more than 350 entries — a record in its threeyear history.

This year, 15 winning artworks will be transformed into vibrant flag banners, proudly displayed in the city centre throughout the festive season.

All other entries will be showcased at eye level on special displays across Launceston, ensuring every young artist's creativity shines.

Lighting of the Tree: A new Saturday night tradition

The beloved Lighting of the Tree event returns to the Brisbane Street Mall with an exciting twist. For the first time, it will take place on a Saturday evening, making it more accessible for Northern Tasmanian families. The 2025 Lighting of the Tree will be held on Saturday, November 29, with the tree lighting to be held at approximately 8.30pm.

Expect a magical evening filled with live music, community spirit and a special visitor from the North Pole as the city’s 10m-tall Christmas tree is illuminated to mark the official start of the festive season.

Carols in the Park: A family favourite

On Sunday, December 21 Carols in the Park will return to City Park, offering a joyful evening of carol singing, live performances, and family-friendly entertainment from some of Northern Tasmania's most talented performers.

This popular event, held just days before Santa’s arrival, invites the Launnie community to come together and celebrate the season in one of the city's most iconic parks. City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Council constantly reviewed feedback from past Christmas events and activities to better tailor them to the Launceston community.

"We’re expecting an unforgettable Christmas this year with some exciting upgrades to our Christmas events and activities," Mayor Garwood said.

"For the first time, we’re moving the Lighting of the Tree to a Saturday night, November 29, to make it easier for families to come along without the after-school or after-work rush. "The feedback from the community has been clear that people want a bit more time to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

"So, this year, we’re creating more space for people to move around, easing up some of those tight crowd spots we’ve seen before, and making it an even better experience for everyone."

"The Deck the Malls art initiative has also been a hit! The creativity from kids right across Northern Tassie has been unreal. The top 15 artworks will feature on special Christmas flag banners, but every single piece that’s been entered will be displayed in some way for the community to enjoy."

"And of course, we’re bringing back Carols in the Park on Sunday, December 21.

"One of the most magical nights of the year in City Park, in partnership with our amazing local community."

"From the buzz around Deck the Malls, to a reimagined Lighting of the Tree, and the always-loved Carols in the Park, our team of Christmas elves at Council have been planning for months to create something special.

"It's all about people, place, and prosperity. Our city’s spirit shining bright and families making memories right here in Launnie."
