Traffic detours will be put in place tomorrow around a section of Cimitiere Street to allow the roadway to be asphalt sealed.

Earlier this year the City of Launceston undertook a major reconstruction of a section of the road which had reached the end of its life.

Over an eight week period, the section of Cimitiere Street between Tamar and Lawrence streets was entirely excavated and reconstructed to contemporary standards, including the completion of base level works and installation of appropriate subsoil drainage.

Timed to avoid clashes with major events in Launceston's City Park like Festivale and Symphony Under the Stars, the final stages of the works were unfortunately impacted by the onset of wet and cold weather.

This meant the Council could only undertake a temporary 'winter seal' of the road surface until weather conditions improved.

Now that warmer weather has returned, the Council will undertake a permanent asphalt seal of the roadway, with work starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 18 and finishing Saturday, October 20.

City of Launceston General Manager Michael Stretton said alternate accesses to some Cimitiere St-based businesses would be necessary on Friday and Saturday. Details of these are available here.

"We thank motorists and nearby businesses for their patience over the past few months while the temporary seal has been in place on this section of roadway," Mr Stretton said.

"This is obviously an important roadway for the city, a major East-West link and — while we may have been beaten by the weather earlier this year — I'm pleased that we're now in a position to finalise this upgrade.

"Our infrastructure staff are hopeful the work will be completed by the end of Saturday, weather depending, and that the surface can be re-opened to motorists on Sunday.

"We'd ask motorists using this section of Cimitiere St between Thursday and Saturday to obey temporary road signage and speed limits which may be in place and to please bear with us while the work is completed."
