Launceston's revamped Civic Square will light up this Saturday for Civic Square Cinema, a free community event showcasing two fabulous family-friendly films.

The event is an initiative of the Launceston City Heart Project, and will utilise UTAS Stadium's modular big screen, which is being trucked to Civic Square for the occasion.

Two PG-rated films will be screened: Jumanji - Welcome To The Jungle at 3.30pm and The Greatest Showman at 6.30pm, and the event is alcohol and smoke-free. Toilets will be available in the Launceston Library.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said people were encouraged to bring beanbags, chairs, picnic rugs and picnics to the event.

"Using the modular scoreboard in Civic Square is something we trialled a few years ago, and the revamp of Civic Square means it's now a much more inviting space for this kind of event," Mayor van Zetten said.

"The Sailor Food Truck and Swirlies Gourmet Ice Cream will both be there selling a range of food and snacks, and the Pod Cafe and Barbecue at the Launceston Library will also be open. "We hope it will be a great afternoon and evening of free entertainment for Launceston families, and we look forward to seeing plenty of people there."
