Council candidates invited to information session

Prospective local government candidates considering a tilt at council are invited to the City of Launceston's 2022 Local Government Elections Candidate Information Session at the Town Hall next week.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the one hour information session would give candidates an insight into the strategic policy making and operational arms of the City of Launceston.

"Local government is the coalface of community decision making, and there are enormous opportunities for people from all walks of life to make a positive contribution to Launceston's community," Mayor van Zetten said.

"If you're considering throwing your hat in the ring at the upcoming elections, this session will be a great way to get up to speed on what is required and to explore the nuts and bolts of how the City of Launceston functions day-to-day.

"Importantly it will provide an insight into what it's like to be a Councillor, provide advice on how to avoid some common pitfalls with election signage, and explore the role and functions of key staff.

"For the first time in Tasmania, the upcoming local government elections will introduce compulsory voting which will make these elections more relevant than ever. "Personally, I'm hopeful this year we'll see more female candidates and candidates from other groups who have historically been under represented on local councils in Tasmania.

"No matter your age, experience or background, I believe everyone has a contribution to make."

The City of Launceston's 2022 Local Government Elections Candidate Information Session will be held on Thursday August 25 at the Town Hall from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.
