Draft climate action plan out for community feedback
Published on 10 July 2025
The City of Launceston is calling on residents and local businesses to have their say on the Draft Community Climate Action Plan, a roadmap to achieve a sustainable, low-carbon future for the city.
Following an initial round of community consultation last year, the draft plan has been shaped by input from residents, local businesses, and experts through the 'Low Carbon Launceston' engagement process.
Now, the community is invited to provide feedback to ensure the plan reflects its vision and priorities.
The Draft Community Climate Action Plan outlines ambitious goals to reduce emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2050, in line with national and state objectives.
It focuses on four key areas: sustainable transport, zero carbon energy, natural resources, and a circular economy.
The plan highlights community-led actions, such as choosing low-emission transport options and embracing circular economy principles, alongside Council-led initiatives like supporting electric vehicle and active transport infrastructure and increasing urban tree cover.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood encouraged residents to find out more about the plan at https://tomorrowtogetherlaunceston.com.au/emissions
"This plan is a shared vision for a sustainable Launceston, built on the values and aspirations of our community," Mayor Garwood said.
"We’ve heard from residents that climate action is not only vital for our environment but also brings economic benefits like lower living costs and new job opportunities. Now, we need your feedback to make this plan as effective as possible."
Residents can provide feedback online at tomorrowtogetherlaunceston.com.au until 28 July 2025.
Additionally, the City of Launceston’s Sustainability Team will host drop-in sessions every Monday in July from 11am to 1pm at The Lounge, 111-113 St John Street, Launceston, where community members can discuss the plan in person and share their ideas.
Key highlights of the plan include:
• Sustainable Transport: Reducing the 33% of emissions from on-road transport by supporting cycling, walking, public transport, and the uptake of electric vehicles.
• Zero Carbon Energy: Increasing energy efficiency at home and the workplace, transitioning away from fossil fuel-based gas and supporting the increased uptake of solar PV
• Natural Resources: Supporting low-emission farming and expanding urban forests to sequester carbon.
• Circular Economy: Cutting waste emissions, which contribute 8% to the city’s total, through initiatives like the Launceston Repair Café and improved landfill diversion and recycling.
