Fans left breathless by The Corrs concert announcement

This week's announcement that Irish pop band The Corrs have included Launceston's UTAS Stadium as part of their national tour is simply amazing, according to City of Launceston Mayor Danny Gibson.

Mayor Gibson said the reaction on social media had been astonishing and he had no doubt that music lovers from all over Tasmania were as equally excited as he was at the opportunity to see the incredibly talented artists perform in Launceston late next year.

"Given it has been more than 20 years since they released their first album, it's easy to forget just how incredibly successful and popular The Corrs were at the peak of their career, selling some 40 million albums worldwide with several number one hits right across the globe," Mayor Gibson said.

"It's also wonderful to see Australia's own Natalie Imbruglia and Toni Childs named as special guests."

Mayor Gibson said the announcement was testament to all the hard work that has gone on behind the scenes to secure a concert of this magnitude for Launceston.

"It's also a tremendous tick of approval for UTAS Stadium as a venue and shows just how flexible it is in terms of hosting a broad range of events- from AFL, A League Soccer, Big Bash cricket and rugby through to Elton John concerts, as it has done in the past," he said.

"Traditionally, AFL matches during our winter months are incredibly positive from an economic perspective in the city.

"Those games, as well as the Big Bash games, bring vitality and vibrancy to our CBD, injecting tens of millions of dollars into our local economy every year - whether that's through cafes or restaurants, bars and our hotels."

Mayor Gibson said an event such as The Corrs concert in November will be the perfect introduction to what will undoubtedly be an incredibly busy calendar of events either side of Christmas, particularly those large-scale events such as MONA FOMA, Festivale, and now The Corrs live in concert at UTAS Stadium.

The Council is likely to consider a funding request from the promoters in the coming weeks to assist in hosting the event.
