With the redevelopment of Civic Square progressing as part of the Launceston City Heart Project, the main entrance to the Town Hall will be closed to the public this week until January 22.

Both eastern entrances to the Town Hall off St John Street will remain open to the public, including the lift.

Access to Tasmania Police will be via Cimitiere Street and the Town Hall car park behind the main Town Hall building, accessed off St John Street.

Signage has been erected around the Town Hall and Civic Square to direct people to the available accesses.

City of Launceston General Manager Michael Stretton said access to all businesses in Civic Square remained open.

"Retrofitting CBD public spaces is always a challenge and we appreciate people's patience and understanding while these works are being completed," Mr Stretton said.

"The works are on track and we expect to be able to open up a portion of the newly redeveloped square in time for the Queen's Baton Relay, which will utilise the space when it arrives in Launceston in early February.

"The redevelopment of Civic Square is an exciting project for the city, and the Council is now gearing up for a redevelopment of the Brisbane Street Mall, having called for tenders for construction of that space late in 2017."
