Finding somewhere to park in the CBD on a Sunday will be easier and more convenient with the City of Launceston opening its Paterson Street East multi-storey car park from this weekend.

The Paterson Street East car park will now open from 10am to 5.30pm every Sunday, Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said, joining the Paterson Street West car park which already operates on Sundays between 10am and 5.30pm.

"We want to let the people of Northern Tasmania know that Launceston is open for business," Mayor van Zetten said.

"The introduction of our new operating system for our multi-storey car parks means we can now open those facilities on a Sunday to the public at no extra cost to ratepayers."

Director of Facilities Management, Bruce MacIsaac, said that by having an extra multi-storey car park open on a Sunday, shoppers — particularly in the lead-up to the busy Christmas period — would be able to park closer to the majority of CBD shops with more ease of accessibility and in a shady and safe environment

"We have found that with on-street meters free on a Sunday, they were being taken up predominantly by people who work in the CBD," Mr MacIsaac said.

"This meant it was becoming more and more difficult for people coming in to the city to shop to find somewhere to park. Opening up Paterson Street East will alleviate many if not all of those problems for shoppers."

Normal parking fees for Paterson Street East will apply, however it will still be free to park in both multi-storey car parks between 3.30 and 5.30pm. Pensioners will still be able to use their free three-hour parking voucher.

Both Paterson St East and West will close at 5.30pm on a Sunday.

Free parking on a Sunday will still be available at:

• all CBD on-street parking bays

• Seaport

• York Street West car park

• Inveresk

• Royal Park

• Bathurst Street car park

• Home Point, and

• Willis Street car park
