Riverbend ready for rock challenge

The Riverbend Rock Challenge is returning for 2022, with six Northern Tasmanian high school bands set to compete for their slice of rock 'n' roll glory.

Now in its third year, the Riverbend Rock Challenge forms one of 12 events being staged this year by the Tasmanian Rock Challenge, which seeks to celebrate the talents of Tasmania's contemporary young musicians.

This year's event will be held on Thursday, April 14 from 3pm to 7pm at Launceston's Riverbend Park.

Along with musical performances, the Riverbend Rock Challenge will also include free fairy floss from Monica's Fairy Floss, a free barbecue coordinated by the Rob Fairs Foundation and National Joblink, and basketball games hosted by the Youth Health Service. Launceston

Mayor Albert van Zetten said Riverbend Rock was a great opportunity to experience some up-and-coming Northern Tasmanian musical talent.

"I'm delighted to see the Riverbend Rock Challenge returning for another year and encourage Launceston families to come along on Thursday to enjoy the event," Mayor van Zetten said.

"Riverbend Park is a great location for this event, which provides some wonderful family-friendly entertainment and celebrates the talents of our young people."

Launceston Deputy Mayor and Northern Youth Coordinating Committee Chair Danny Gibson said he was excited to see the six Northern Tasmanian bands in action.

"I'm thrilled that we have six local bands, comprising Northern Tasmanian young people, taking part in the challenge and showcasing what musical performance is to them," Cr Gibson said.

"I can't wait to see them perform. I hope Northern Tasmanians get out and show their support by enjoying everything that the Riverbend Rock Challenge has to offer at Riverbend Park on Thursday."
