The new pedestrian and cycling bridge linking the Seaport to Riverbend Park is now open for public use.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said it had been exciting to see the development of the new pedestrian and cycling bridge from the Seaport to the Riverbend Park side of the river.

"The chief contractor for this project has been BridgePro Engineering and they have done a fantastic job, along with Haywards Steel who manufactured the thousands of components required.

"As soon as the fences were taken down this morning, people began to cross the bridge back and forth, so clearly the public were curious to see how it looked up close.

"Access is now open from the Seaport across the bridge and west around the pathway to the Silo Hotel, or East onto Lindsay Street and down to Inveresk. There is some construction fencing up in various parts of what will become Riverbend Park, but the walkways are open.

"I think it's going to be a great asset for Launceston into the future, and it means we now have a dedicated pedestrian link all the way from the Cataract Gorge, through Kings Park and Royal Park, to the Seaport and across to Riverbend Park.

"Demolition of the old Boral site has also started this week as the Council gears up for the work on Riverbend Park.

"With $210m worth of development approved by the City of Launceston this financial year, the Civic Square redevelopment complete, the Brisbane St Mall redevelopment underway, the Macquarie House redevelopment underway, the Boral relocation complete and work starting on Riverbend Park, I think it's safe to say this is a transformative time for Launceston."

The Council expects to hold an official opening for the new bridge at a later date.
