Riverbend Park
This new all-abilities park has transformed a former industrial precinct into a major new recreational area for Launceston, funded by the City of Launceston and the State and Federal Governments.
Riverbend Park is divided into four zones: The River Play area, Gorge Play area, Wild Core area, and Urban Plaza.
Each zone contains a range of play equipment and experiences, including swings, diggers, sand pits, a wheelchair carousel, a water play area, musical instruments, outdoor table tennis, see-saws and a full size sports court.
The park's largest attractions are undoubtedly the Sky Walk and the 'confluence net', two of the largest pieces of play equipment in Australia.
It also boasts barbecue facilities, public toilets, a giant mural, and a fenced toddler play area.
Inclusive Play Chat Board
An Inclusive Play Chat Board(PDF, 1MB) has been installed at Riverbend Park. The sign is the first of its kind in Tasmania and features customised icons specific to Riverbend Park, along with braille to support accessibility and inclusive communication opportunities for all users.
What is a Chat Board?
Chat Boards are communication tools that use symbols, pictures and words to assist people who may experience barriers to verbal communication. They support social connection, participation and inclusive play by helping children, families and community members communicate with one another in shared spaces.
The Chat Board was developed in consultation with lived experience representatives and in partnership with Variety Tasmania to ensure the design reflected the needs of the community and provided meaningful inclusive outcomes.
The installation reflects Council’s commitment to creating welcoming public spaces where everyone can participate, communicate and feel included.
