Our Sister Cities
The City of Launceston has formed long-standing relationships with four cities around the world, promoting the idea of a global family.
Launceston has maintained a sister-city relationship with Ikeda in Japan since 1965. Launceston City Park's famous macaque monkeys were donated by Ikeda in 1981. Launceston then gifted three wombats to Ikeda’s Satsukiyama Zoo in 1990 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the sister city relationship. A City of Launceston delegation visited Ikeda in 2025 to commemorate the 60-year anniversary of our sister city relationship.
Napa, USA
Launceston signed a sister city agreement with the City of Napa in 1988. Napa is the hub of the globally renowned Napa Valley wine region, which is home to more than 400 wineries.
Taiyuan, China
Launceston signed a sister city agreement with Taiyuan in 1995. Taiyuan is known as the "Dragon City" and is the capital and largest city in Shanxi province. Taiyuan has historically played a central in China's coal industry but is transitioning towards green energy through a focus on hydrogen technologies.
Putian, China
Launceston signed a friendship city agreement with Putian in 2017. Putian is a prefect level city in Fujian province. The partnership complements the Tasmanian government's sister province partnership with Fujian.
