Birchalls redevelopment breaks ground with new play space for Brisbane

Construction on the long-awaited Birchalls redevelopment officially starts today, with Birchalls Build Co breaking ground on the first phase of this iconic Launceston retail space.

The first phase of a multi-phase redevelopment, Birchalls Build Co will begin construction on a new, permanent play space in the Brisbane Street Mall. This project responds to a long-standing community aspiration to develop the site and will deliver a new family-friendly community asset.

Birchalls Build Co's Sam Haberle said it was an exciting milestone to break ground on this project, which will deliver a community asset that will be enjoyed by families for generations to come.

"The Birchalls building is one of Launceston's most recognisable retail landmarks, and since its closure there has been significant community discussion about its future. Birchalls Build Co is excited to be able to deliver this project that will change the face of Launceston's retail space."

The play space construction marks the first phase of the Birchalls redevelopment, which will bring a public thoroughfare with hospitality leases, public amenities including toilets on the ground floor. This public space will be complemented by inner-city apartments on the upper floors.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said this was an exciting time for Launceston.

"The Birchalls redevelopment is the culmination of a critical partnership between the City of Launceston and Birchalls Build Co to respond to the community needs and bring a modern feel to the Brisbane Street Mall, with new family-friendly spaces like the new play space!"

The play space will be under construction from September 21, and the build is expected to take several months to complete. During construction, patrons and businesses will still be able to access the Mall and any disruption will be managed accordingly.
