Bus stop safety trial underway

Launceston residents, bus passengers, and city-centre businesses are set to benefit from a trial of security guards at the St John Street bus stops, which commenced this week following a Council decision earlier this month.
For many years, concerns around safety and behaviour at the central CBD bus interchange have been raised by passengers, pedestrians, and nearby traders.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said that while the Council had been working through more positive, long-term approaches to improving the space, there had also been a clear call for some immediate, visible action.
As a range of options for relocating the CBD’s central bus stops continue to be explored, Councillors earlier this month endorsed three options for further investigation.
Included as part of that same decision, Councillors supported the introduction of a visible security presence at the existing St John Street bus stops during peak times, not as a long-term fix, but as a practical step to improve safety and confidence in the area right now.
The security trial is now operational and is aimed at improving safety, reducing anti-social behaviour, and making the space more welcoming, while longer-term solutions are worked through. During the four-week trial, security will be present at the two bus stops from Monday to Saturday between 1.30pm and 9.30pm.
Mayor Matthew Garwood said the trial would be closely monitored, with feedback from neighbouring businesses, public transport users and CBD stakeholders helping to inform any future decisions.
"Safety and comfort in our City Heart really matters, and while this isn’t the full solution, it’s a step that responds to what the community and businesses have been telling us," Mayor Garwood said.
"We know real, lasting change comes from more than just enforcement, which is why we’ll continue progressing more positive approaches like activation, support services, and better design of the space, alongside this trial.
"We’ll keep listening, keep refining our approach, and continue working toward a longer-term outcome that creates a safer, more welcoming, and more connected space for everyone."
