The City of Launceston has approved more than $114,000 in combined funding for 18 events set to take place across the municipality later this year, in a significant investment designed to support local community organisations and bolster the city’s profile as an events destination.

At yesterday's Council Meeting, councillors unanimously endorsed the first rounds of both the Major Event Sponsorship Program and Small Event Sponsorship Program for the 2025/26 financial year.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the programs were a direct investment in community vitality and regional economic activity.

“Launceston continues to cement its reputation as one of Tasmania’s most vibrant events destinations - and that’s thanks to the incredible range of community groups, volunteers and creative organisations who bring these events to life,” Mayor Garwood said.

“These sponsorships not only support economic activity in our city, they also foster connection, inclusion, and pride in what Launceston has to offer.”

The Council allocated $74,000 across seven major events, including:

• Gilmore Cycling Classic ($15,000)

• City of Launceston Tasmanian International Bowls Classic ($10,243)

• Lions Club Christmas Parade ($9,375)

• Sally’s Ride ($9,375)

• Effervescence Tasmania 2025 ($15,000)

Chair of the Event Sponsorship Assessment Panel for this round, Councillor Andrew Palmer, said the breadth of events supported highlighted the city’s cultural and recreational diversity.

“This is a good news story for Launceston. We’re distributing thousands of dollars in funding to a great list of community events that are as varied as they are exciting,” Cr Palmer said.

“There’s something for everyone from sports fans to food lovers, and I encourage everyone to get behind these events and show their support.”

An additional $40,000 in small event sponsorship was also approved across local events ranging from multicultural celebrations and family-friendly days to workshops and sporting showcases.

Small event recipients include:

• Thai Food and Culture Festival 2025

• St Giles Burn

• Lilydale Christmas Carols

• Launceston Festival of Dance

• WIFT Tasmania screening

• St Cecilia Performance Challenge

The City of Launceston’s sponsorship programs are delivered in two annual rounds, with the remaining funds to be allocated later in 2025.
