The City of Launceston has endorsed the next stage of works for the Northern Tasmania Cricket Association Sports Complex redevelopment.

At this week's Council meeting, Councillors voted to proceed with detailed design, the submission of a Development Application, and continued advocacy for funding to deliver a modern, accessible, and inclusive sporting precinct.

The endorsement follows extensive planning and consultation, with the project identified as a priority in the City of Launceston’s Strategic Plan 2025-2035 and the Launceston: A City Building Its Future advocacy prospectus. The redevelopment aims to deliver upgraded facilities and grounds, maintain the heritage of the site, and increase community access and participation opportunities.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said this week's decision was an important step in delivering a fit-for-purpose sports hub for the region.

"The NTCA is such an iconic venue in Northern Tasmania’s sporting history. In fact, it’s recognised as the oldest first-class cricket ground in the country, and even Sir Donald Bradman graced the pitch here,” Mayor Garwood said.

"If it’s going to keep serving players, spectators, and the wider community, it needs a big refresh.

"This decision is a really important step. By locking in the design direction and backing the next stage of work, Council is showing that we’re serious about delivering a facility that not only honours the character of the ground but also meets the needs of today and tomorrow.

"It’s about supporting the growth of all sport but in particular, women’s and junior sport, providing better amenities, and making the space more inclusive, accessible, and welcoming for everyone.

"A huge thanks goes to all the clubs and community members who’ve put their time and ideas into the project so far, it’s that input that’s helping shape a future-ready NTCA."

The redevelopment will occur in stages, beginning with car park improvements, service upgrades, refurbishment of existing stands, and the creation of a continuous accessible pathway and outdoor play space.

Detailed design work will now progress under the existing architectural services contract, with the Council continuing to seek external grants and funding opportunities to deliver construction in partnership with the State and Federal Governments.
