The City of Launceston will next week consider the first step required in a proposed upgrade of the Cataract Gorge Scenic Chairlift.
The privately-owned chairlift was constructed in 1972 at the Cataract Gorge, which is managed by the City of Launceston.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the chairlift had conformed to the accepted standards and best design practices of the time, however no longer met contemporary visitor expectations.
"The operators have reached out to undertake an upgrade of the chairlift," Mayor Garwood said.
"As the Cataract Gorge is managed by the City of Launceston, the Council must first agree that a Development Application can be lodged.
"If the Council agrees to allow a Development Application to be lodged, the Development Application process will provide an opportunity for Launceston community members to provide feedback through public representations on the proposal put forward."
