The City of Launceston, in an exciting partnership with the Department of State Growth, is launching the Northern Gateway project —  a game-changing public artwork located on the Midland Highway’s Southern Outlet, one of our city’s main entrances.

This is your chance to leave a lasting mark on Launceston’s identity, whether you’re an artist or a proud resident with a phone camera and a vision.

Funded by a grant through the Tasmanian Government’s Northern Gateway Improvements program, the Northern Gateway project is set to deliver a bold, breathtaking artwork that captures the heart and soul of Launceston.

Kicking off this week, we’re rolling out two thrilling opportunities for our community to get involved: an Expressions of Interest process for artists and a photography challenge for residents to inspire the artwork’s creation.

Artists, Unleash Your Creativity!

The EOI process is now open, calling on artists — especially those with a connection to Launceston — to pitch their vision for a permanent, show-stopping installation.

"We’re buzzing with excitement to invite artists to shape this landmark project," said City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood.

"The Northern Gateway will be a vibrant celebration of who we are — a chance for artists to create something unforgettable that sparks joy, conversation, and pride. I can’t wait to see the bold ideas that come to life!"

We’re inviting every Launceston resident to grab their phone or camera and snap a photo that captures what makes our city special.

From the landscape of the Cataract Gorge to vibrant markets, leafy streets to community events, your images will form a visual inspiration catalogue to guide artists in creating an artwork that truly reflects Launceston.

"Public art is about connection, and this project is a chance for our entire community to shine,” Mayor Garwood said.

"Whether you’re an artist crafting a masterpiece or a resident sharing a photo of what Launceston means to you, you’re helping create a gateway that will welcome visitors for generations. Let’s show the world what makes Launnie unique!"
