Heritage Sketch challenges school aged children across Launceston to produce an artwork in any medium celebrating a heritage place or item based within the Launceston municipality.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said he was pleased to see artworks submitted in a wide variety of mediums this year, including sketches, paintings, photography, collages and charcoal drawings.
"This year we’ve had a record number of entries, and what’s been really exciting is the wide variety of Launceston stories and places the students have chosen to explore," Mayor Matthew Garwood said.
"From the Gorge to City Park to the Town Clock, our city’s icons have been captured in fresh and creative ways. "The standard has been so high that shortlisting has been no easy task."
"I want to congratulate every single student who put forward an artwork. Coming from an arts background myself, I know how much courage it takes to share your creativity with others so a huge well done to you all."
Heritage Sketch finalists were shortlisted by a panel comprising representatives from the Council's Heritage Advisory Committee, the Council's Arts and Culture Team, and the Launceston Historical Society. Heritage Advisory Committee chair Councillor Susie Cai said the shortlisting process had been challenging.
"The quality of artworks submitted this year was very impressive," Cr Cai said.
"That made it a real challenge for the shortlisting panel to make a selection of finalists, and we had to make some really hard decisions.
"At the end of the day, that just speaks to the amazing entries we received, and it's a real credit to all the students involved that they were able to put forward such incredible artworks."
The shortlisted finalists are on display at the Launceston Library from Saturday, October 18 to Sunday November 2.
As a token of appreciation for entering this year's competition, all entrants will receive a Launceston heritage themed colour book which can be collected from Town Hall Customer Service from Wednesday 22 October.
