Input sought on adoption of Seaport name

The City of Launceston is inviting the Northern Tasmanian community to have its say on a proposal to officially name the popular riverside area known informally as Seaport.
For many years, the vibrant precinct to the north of Royal Park – at the confluence of the Kanamaluka / Tamar Estuary and North Esk River – has been commonly referred to as Seaport.
Home to a marina, boardwalk, restaurants, cafes and links to Riverbend Park, the area has become a key recreational destination for locals and visitors alike. Despite its widespread use and strong local identity, Seaport has never been formally recognised as a place name.
The City of Launceston is now proposing to apply to Placenames Tasmania to create a locality named Seaport.
This would:
• Enable clearer referencing in wayfinding, mapping, signage, and digital platforms
• Support destination branding, tourism promotion, and event hosting
• Improve navigation for emergency services, residents, and tourists If the Seaport name is ultimately adopted, it will not affect property addresses or create any administrative changes.
The proposed name would apply to the area extending from the Charles Street Bridge along the Seaport boardwalk to the western end of the Marina. City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the proposal reflected the precinct's established role in Launceston's lifestyle and economy.
"Seaport is already a well-loved part of our city,” Mayor Garwood said.
"It’s a place people go to eat, walk, spend time by the water, and enjoy the space between the Cataract Gorge and Riverbend Park. Giving Seaport formal recognition builds on what’s already there. It makes it easier to promote, strengthens its identity, and helps make sure it continues to be a place people enjoy well into the future.
"This is about good place making, backing local identity, and working with the community on projects that shape where Launceston is heading."
