The redevelopment of the Invermay Road and Lindsay Street intersection is on track for completion, with newly installed traffic lights set to be switched on Wednesday night (June 4) if weather conditions are favourable and final testing completed.

The $3 million project, which began in late January, has transformed the former Inveresk roundabout into a state-of-the-art raised and signalised intersection, designed to boost safety for all road users.

The major upgrade also included significant improvements to the nearby Boland and Tamar streets intersection and a 250m stretch of Invermay Road, making the busy corridor more efficient and easier to navigate.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the activation of the new traffic lights marked a significant milestone for one of Launceston’s busiest intersections.

"We’ve responded to the community's long-standing concerns that the old roundabout was a bottleneck at peak times and a serious challenge for pedestrians and vehicles to navigate safely," Mayor Garwood said.

"The new raised and signalised intersection is a game-changer, allowing for safer crossings, smoother traffic flow, and improved access to Inveresk’s major cultural and recreational facilities including QVMAG, UTAS and UTAS Stadium."

Mayor Garwood said the Council appreciated the community's patience during the construction period.

"We know roadworks can be disruptive, especially in a high traffic and pedestrian area such as this, and we're really grateful for the support we've had from local residents, businesses, facilities and road users," he said.

"We’re really happy with the outcome of this complex project - an intersection that makes Inveresk safer and more accessible for everyone."

Motorists, cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users are advised the new traffic lights are expected to be operational from this Wednesday evening (June 4). Please be alert to changed conditions in and around the redevelopment site and comply with all traffic light signals, road signage and directions.
