Launceston Cup returns for 2023

Published on 21 February 2023

Launceston's summer events season continues this week with the return of the Launceston Cup.

Following the success of Mona Foma over the weekend, Launceston Mayor Danny Gibson said he was expecting another huge turn-out for tomorrow's Launceston Cup; one of the city's most historic social occasions.

"It has been an absolutely bumper summer events season in Launceston so far with Beerfest, Festivale, Mona Foma and now the Launceston Cup tomorrow," Mayor Gibson said.

"Collectively these events have drawn thousands of people to our city and injected millions of dollars into our economy.

"Now we turn to the glitz and glamour of the Launceston Cup, with some 10,000 people expected to be in attendance at the Mowbray Racecourse.

"In 2023, the Launceston Cup is marking its 159th year.

"The weather forecast is looking great, and I hope attendees from across Tasmania and interstate have a wonderful time enjoying the fashion, food, wine and atmosphere."

Tasmanian Turf Club Vice Chairman and Marketing Manager Brent Crawford said he was excited to see preparations well underway for the event.

"This year's Launceston Cup is really exciting because we have Hall of Fame champion jockey Damien Oliver set to ride Piiink Beauty, which is a massive coup," Mr Crawford said.

"Bookings are really strong and we're expecting a lot of people through the gates — our corporate areas are fully booked out. We're introducing a new horseshoe enclosure this year, and Launceston hospitality stalwart Mud is hosting a cocktail bar.

"The weather is looking absolutely fantastic and we're looking forward to a stellar day for the 2023 Launceston Cup."
