Boral's new batching plant facility and offices in Gleadow St has been officially opened, paving the way for demolition of the old Lindsay St plant.

Boral Tasmania General Manager Gary Chapman said Boral was excited to see the new purpose-built plant up and running.

"It's fantastic to be opening a contemporary, purpose-built batching plant here in Launceston because it is going to allow us to continue to provide high quality construction products into the Northern region, and indeed, across the State," Mr Chapman said.

The City of Launceston compulsorily acquired the old Lindsay Street site in 2008 as part of the $60m flood levee reconstruction project.

The opening of the new Gleadow St facility also means work on the Riverbend Park recreation area — which will feature an all-abilities playspace and other recreational attractions — can begin in earnest.

"Both the flood levee reconstruction project and the Riverbend Park redevelopment are great projects for Launceston, and the relocation of our facility is an important part of those projects,” said Mr Chapman.

"We have been working in collaboration with the Council to make sure we get the details right, and it's a process that has taken a long time and involved a lot of complexities.

"We're thrilled now to see the outcomes of all that work and we're excited to see our new plant up and running."

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the relocation was good news for Launceston.

"This has been a major endeavour involving a business which employs Launceston residents, provides services and products to the Northern Tasmanian construction industry, and which is demonstrably committed to our city," Mayor van Zetten said.

"It has taken many years to get to this point, and I want to thank Boral both for the way the company has worked constructively with us as a Council, and for its ongoing commitment to Launceston.

"Demolition of the old plant is expected to take about six weeks, and will begin this week."
