During routine water testing by City of Launceston officers at Corra Linn, high levels of an enterococcus species of bacteria have been detected in recent days.

The Council advises people not to come into contact with the water at Corra Linn until further notice.

The Council conducts regular water quality testing in Launceston's rivers and waterways in the interests of safeguarding the safety of swimmers and other water users.

While Corra Linn is not managed by the City of Launceston, the Council includes it in its recreational water sampling program.

The Council will take new samples over the weekend and advise residents when bacteria levels have dropped to safe levels.

The recent spate of hot weather has led to a rise in water temperature, which is believed to have contributed to the high levels of bacteria.

City of Launceston General Manager Michael Stretton urged people to pay attention to warning signs in different recreational waterways around Launceston, as these will always offer up-to-date advice on any known water quality issues.
