The City of Launceston’s much-loved Deck the Malls art competition is back — and this year it comes with an exciting new twist.

For the first time, 15 winning entries will be transformed into large banners proudly displayed in the Brisbane Street Mall throughout the festive season, giving young artists the chance to see their creativity light up the city centre.

Children and young people from across Launceston are invited to take part, with two categories available:

• Category 1: 0 - Prep

All entries will be mounted on Christmas pole surrounds across the CBD.

15 entries chosen at random will also receive a prize pack valued at more than $150, including a $50 Petrarch’s Book voucher, family passes to the Aquatic Centre, waterslide passes, and more.

• Category 2: Years 1 - 12

15 winners will be selected in total: five each from Years 1 - 4, 5 - 8, and 9 - 12.

Each winner will have their artwork turned into a banner for the Brisbane Street Mall, as well as receiving the prize pack.

Submission boxes will be placed at convenient locations including the Launceston Library, Town Hall Customer Service, Starting Point Neighbourhood House in Ravenswood, Launceston Aquatic Centre, QVMAG at Inveresk and the Northern Suburbs Community Centres in both Mowbray and Newnham.

Entries can also be submitted online.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the competition was a highlight of the city’s festive season.

"Christmas in Launceston is about bringing people together, celebrating creativity, and creating lasting memories,” Mayor Garwood said.

"The Deck the Malls art competition is one of those special traditions where kids get to see their work proudly displayed in the heart of our city. I can’t wait to see the imagination and festive spirit our young artists bring to life this year."

Entries are open now and close Friday, October 17.
