Mayor and Treasurer - new LED fencing at UTAS Stadium

University of Tasmania Stadium is primed and ready for this year's inaugural Launceston Big Bash clash with the official launch of its LED perimeter fencing today.

City of Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the investment by the Council to purchase the fencing, with funding from the state government, was pivotal in securing Launceston first-ever men's Big Bash game between the Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder under lights on December 30.

"The LED fencing you see around so many grounds across the country now is a pre-requisite for securing Big Bash games," Mayor van Zetten said.

"We as a Council knew full well that if we wanted to secure a BBL game here in Launceston - and possibly more into the future - we would need make that investment at UTAS Stadium.

"The Council is extremely grateful to the state government for their support in helping to make this possible,"

Mayor van Zetten said. Preparations for the inaugural day-night match at UTAS Stadium are already in full swing, with a drop-in wicket already in place.

Mayor van Zetten said there was a growing air of excitement around the match against the Thunder, and ticket sales were strong.

"Given the date and the night fixture, we're fully expecting the match to be a sell-out, so I would encourage all cricket fans to get in early and purchase their tickets," Mayor van Zetten said.

Installation of the 500 magnesium alloy cabinets that house the LED fencing began in early November and took a team of more than 10 technicians about two weeks to install.

The full-colour panels are 960mm high and 960mm wide, and are capable of addressing large audiences from a few metres to more than 100m.

The panels feature a soft top cover for both player and audience protection and feature portable mounting struts so they are able to be reconfigured in layout to suit alternate sports such as soccer.

The system is controlled by a dedicated computer server and is operated by a single technician.

"While it will make its public debut at the Big Bash game in December, the fencing will also be used during AFL matches next season and we have no doubt it will add to the atmosphere of any major event we hold at the stadium," Mayor van Zetten said.

"We certainly want to bring as many types of top-level sporting events to the city and I have no doubt whatsoever that the Big Bash will be a huge success."

The Hurricanes' match in Launceston will include a Women's Big Bash match against Sydney the same day, as well as a second women's game the following day.
