The Charles Street bridge will be closed to traffic and pedestrians between 6pm and 10pm on Wednesday, October 15, as part of an important flood preparedness exercise.

The East Tamar Highway will be closed from William Street to Lindsay Street while Council crews test the installation of the bridge’s two Bauer flood gates.

Detours will be in place and motorists are encouraged to use the Tamar Street bridge as an alternate route.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the timing of the exercise had been carefully considered to minimise disruption while ensuring staff can safely operate.

"Launceston’s levee system protects more than 5,000 residents and 400 businesses. To make sure it does its job when it matters most, we need to regularly test the gates, the equipment and the processes," Mayor Garwood said.

"These exercises are about giving our teams and emergency services real, hands-on training so they’re ready when the time comes. Every test makes us sharper and helps us make improvements where needed."

Mayor Garwood acknowledged the short closure may be inconvenient, but said it was a necessary part of being prepared.

"Launceston has seen more than 40 major floods in its history. Preparedness is our best defence, and these exercises make sure we’re ready to respond when the next flood arrives.”

The City of Launceston thanks the community for its patience and understanding during this essential exercise.

Residents are also encouraged to consider their own flood preparedness measures at home. You can 'Know Your Risk, Make a Plan' at: launceston.tas.gov.au/Emergency-Management-Hub
