The City of Launceston will begin work on an upgrade of a 1.2km stretch of the West Tamar Trail later this month.

The existing trail will be widened from 2.5m to 3m and the old surface will be fully renewed, creating a safer trail surface for bikes, prams, pedestrians and other recreational users.

The track will be resurfaced with an asphalt mix utilising recycled glass - a sustainable material already used successfully in Launceston on some roads and trails.

Approximately 400m of the trail on the approach to Valley Street will be realigned to reduce impacts caused by high tides.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the project was expected to be completed before Christmas.

“The West Tamar Trail is one of Launceston’s most loved recreational routes - connecting Royal Park, the Tailrace and everything in between,” Mayor Garwood said.

“This upgrade is about more than just resurfacing; it’s about future-proofing a space that brings people together.

"Whether you’re walking the dog, taking the kids out in the pram, or commuting by bike, this trail is part of everyday life for so many locals.

“We’re investing in its renewal to make sure it continues to serve our community safely and sustainably for decades to come, in line with our Strategic Plan’s focus on liveability, wellbeing and environmental responsibility.”
