Argyle Street Road Reseal

26 August 2025

Due to the forecast rain, the reseal works on Argyle Street have been postponed and will not occur on Friday 29 August 2025.

Residents will receive notification when the works have been rescheduled.

22 August 2025

The City of Launceston will be undertaking road surface resealing works on Argyle Street, from Alfred Street to the end of the cul-de-sac, on Friday 29 August 2025 from 7am to 5pm.

Road Closure
During this time, Argyle Street from Alfred Street to the cul-de-sac will be closed to all traffic. Due to the narrow width of the street and size of machinery, vehicle access cannot be permitted. Residents who need to use their vehicles on this day are advised to park outside the work zone. A map highlighted the reseal zone has been provided on the reverse page for reference.

Access to Alfred Street will remain available, although minor delays may occur.

To assist with the works, please ensure no vehicles are parked on this section of Argyle Street between 7am and 5pm. Parking may resume once the new asphalt has been laid and the road is reopened.

Timing of works is subject to weather conditions. If postponed, works will be rescheduled to the next suitable day.

What is involved in a road reseal?

The road resealing process involves removing the asphalt surface through a method called "milling" and then applying a new layer of asphalt.

In some cases, we overlay the existing asphalt surface with a new layer.

Although it typically takes just a few days to reseal a road, the benefits are long-lasting, with surfaces lasting up to 20-30 years, depending on usage.

Why do we reseal roads?

The City of Launceston's road resealing program is a form of preventative maintenance. As a road surface ages, it becomes brittle and cracks, allowing water to seep into the base layers, which can cause potholes and pavement failures, eventually leading to costly and disruptive road reconstructions.

Resealing is a cost-effective and faster method of repairing roads before they require major intervention.

How are roads chosen to be resealed?

The City of Launceston's four-year road reseal program was developed using data from a recent road network condition assessment carried out by a professional third-party contractor.

Roads included in this program were prioritised based on their condition ratings, the age of the road assets, their location according to the road hierarchy, and asset grouping.
