Cameron Street Pedestrian Crossing and Streetscape Improvements

The City of Launceston will be installing a new mid-block pedestrian crossing on Cameron Street, between 28–32 and 17–33 Cameron Street.

The project aims to calm traffic, enhance safety for pedestrians by narrowing the crossing distance, and improve the streetscape with greenery and seating.

This initiative forms part of the City Heart Place Plan, which was unanimously endorsed by Council in October 2024. The Plan outlines a long-term vision for Launceston’s central area, roughly bounded by Cimitiere, Wellington, Elizabeth and Tamar Streets, and supports improvements that promote vibrant, people-friendly spaces. The project also aligns with the Urban Greening Implementation Plan, which identifies Cameron Street as a priority for greening efforts.

The design will include kerb outstands featuring seating, landscaped garden beds, and two newly planted street trees. To enable the upgrade, two parking spaces will be removed from both the northern and southern sides of the street.

Construction will be carried out by Zanetto Civil and is scheduled to begin on Monday 11 August 2025, with completion expected by the end of October 2025, weather permitting. Working hours will be between 7am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

The works will be completed in two stages, with stage one beginning outside 28-32 Cameron Street. Pedestrian and traffic management controls will be in place throughout the duration of the works to ensure a safe working environment.
