West Tamar Trail Renewal
The City of Launceston will soon be undertaking upgrade works on the West Tamar Trail. The project will focus on renewing the section between Valley Street, Trevallyn, and the pedestrian bridge at the southern end of the West Tamar Silt Ponds (opposite Forest Road).
These works will be carried out by Zanetto Civil.
Works are scheduled to commence on Monday 11 August 2025 and are expected to be completed by mid-December 2025, subject to weather.
Project background: The West Tamar Trail is a popular pathway used by both recreational users and active commuters, linking Tailrace Park in West Tamar with Launceston’s CBD. The trail is part of Launceston’s wider trail network and provides an important connection to several of the city’s well-known recreational routes, including the Cataract Gorge, Royal Park and the Seaport Boardwalk.
In September 2023, TasWater temporarily closed a section of the West Tamar Trail to facilitate sewer pipeline works as part of the Tamar Estuary River Health Action Plan.
As part of this construction activity, a temporary haul road was constructed. Built to a high standard, it was designed to accommodate heavy construction machinery. This road will be retained as a permanent structure to support a realigned section of the West Tamar Trail. The improved alignment will enhance safety and functionality, particularly for public use, and provide improved access for ongoing maintenance.
Please note that the section of trail under renewal will be closed for the duration of works, however, the alternative gravel path alongside the Tamar River will be open for use.
Thank you for your patience and support as we work to improve our trail network.
