The City of Launceston is preparing to start work on an $11 million reconstruction of Margaret St with planning completed for the first stage of the significant streetscape renewal project.

Mayor Matthew Garwood said the Margaret Street Reconstruction Project will deliver a full renewal of the street, combining essential infrastructure upgrades with improvements designed to create a greener, safer and more attractive urban environment.

“Planned improvements include new street trees, upgraded lighting, wider paved footpaths, safer pedestrian crossings, traffic-calming measures and a dedicated separated cycleway designed for riders of all ages and abilities.

“This project will create a street that better serves the people who live, work and invest in the area.

"Margaret St is an important connection between our neighbourhoods and the city centre, and this project gives us the opportunity to create a street that is greener, safer and more inviting.

"As well as renewing essential infrastructure, we're investing in a public space that encourages people to walk, ride, visit local businesses and enjoy spending time in the city.

"The final design reflects the needs of the people who use Margaret St every day."

The project will be delivered in two stages. Stage one, between Frankland St and Frederick St, is expected to commence construction in summer 2026–27. Stage two, extending from Frederick Street to Paterson Street, is currently in the early planning stages and is expected to follow in 2027–28.

With work due to commence later this year, Council will be engaging with property owners, residents and businesses along Margaret St, conducting one-on-one conversations to ensure they are fully-informed about the project and its outcomes.

Mayor Garwood said this would be critical to achieving the best outcome for the project.

"The people who live, work and invest in Margaret Street know it better than anyone.

"As we move toward the creation of a street which properly reflects the character of Launceston and supports the continued renewal of our city centre, we want them to fully understand this streetscape renewal project."
