The City of Launceston will call for community feedback on a proposal to modify the intersection of Elphin Road and Lyttleton Street.

The intersection of Elphin Road and Lyttleton Street has a history of crashes involving crossing traffic, and the proposal would seek to address this by:

• Enlarging the traffic island on the northern side of the intersection;

• Constructing a new traffic island on the southern side of the intersection; and

• Installing a 'no right turn' sign on Elphin Road at Lyttleton Street intersection.

To offset the loss of the right turn at this intersection, Council would provide a dedicated right turn area at the Elphin Road and Dowling Street intersection.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten encouraged people with a view on the proposal to make a comment.

"In order to seek feedback from the public, tomorrow we'll advertise a "Notice of Intention" in accordance with the Local Government Highways Act 1982, and that gives people the opportunity to make written representations on the proposal," Mayor van Zetten said.

"The aim of the proposal is to reduce the number of crashes involving vehicles turning right and through traffic heading north into Lyttleton Street.

"In the five years to June 2016, there were six crashes at this intersection, two of them serious, and our desire is to see the number of future crashes in this area significantly reduced."

Any representations received will be considered by the Transport Commission prior to approving the proposed traffic management.

Submissions can be made until Saturday, May 12.

Please address submissions to David Murray, Project Coordinator, City of Launceston PO Box 396, Launceston or david.murray@launceston.tas.gov.au
