Registrations are now open for the City of Launceston’s annual Hard Waste Collection Program, offering residents a convenient and affordable way to dispose of bulky household items.

For just $15, residents within the Launceston municipality can register unwanted items such as fridges, furniture and other large household goods for collection in March.

Each year, the program diverts more than 40 tonnes of material from landfill, with over 60 per cent of collected items recycled, re-used or re-sold through the Uptipity re-sale shop.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the program was especially valuable for older residents and those without easy access to transport.

"The City of Launceston's Hard Waste Collection is a fantastic opportunity to get rid of larger unwanted items that may be cluttering up the shed or yard," Mayor Garwood said.

"By registering for the collection, you can get those bigger and sometimes tricky items disposed of responsibly, and save yourself time, energy and fuel as well."

City of Launceston Sustainability Team Leader Michael Attard said the program prioritised re-use and resource recovery.

“This program focuses on re-use, re-sale and recycling before anything is considered for landfill,” Mr Attard said.

“Many residents appreciate knowing their unwanted items are assessed for potential re-use or recycling rather than simply being thrown away. It’s a valuable service for the community and delivers clear environmental benefits.”

Residents are encouraged to register any bulky items they no longer need to ensure they can be collected and assessed for re-use, recycling or re-sale.

Registrations close on Friday 27 February.
