2019 City of Launceston Heritage Awards

The 2019 City of Launceston Heritage Awards presentation was held last week at Town Hall.

 There were four award categories this year:

 1. Heritage Project Award – Works under $200,000

For building and landscape works which retain the cultural significance* of a heritage place*

 2. Heritage Project Award – Works over $200,000

For building and landscape works which retain the cultural significance* of a heritage place*

 3. Heritage Promotion Award

For production of media, exhibitions, programs, concepts for heritage sites, or conservation and promotion of heritage collection items.

 And the Heritage Snap! junior photography awards, separated into 3 grade based sections.

Judging panellists for the built Heritage Project and Promotion categories –
 • Dr David Beynon - representative of the UTAS School of Architecture and Design
• Dr Anne Neale - Community representative
• Ananda Carins - Representative of the Real Estate Institute of Tasmania
• Fiona Ranson - City of Launceston Heritage Planner

WINNER:
The Cook and Wash House - 40 Frankland Street

 

2. Heritage Project Award – works over $200,000 - 9 entries

Commendations:
Crabtree Federation House - Alex Ashley Jones on behalf of owner
Angela Edwards - Treffos House - 12 Treffos Place
Helen Fletcher - Dunorlan - 98 Balfour Street
Roger and Laura McBain - Goorak - 16 York Street
Louise Millwood - Two Woods House - 72 Margaret Street
Iain Thompson & Marian Hanley - Magnolia Cottage - 15 Lyttleton Street
Benjamin Davis - The Star Theatre - 217B Invermay Road
Ben Dhanaraj and Joanne Samuel - Ashton Gate House - 32 High Street

WINNER:
Horizontal Retort Building for Tasmanian Ports Corporation Offices
Former Gasworks site, 90-110 Cimitiere Street, Launceston

 

 3. Heritage Promotion Award - 2 entries

Commendation:
Unify Design - Laser Scan Data for representation of heritage buildings - 121 Cimitiere Street

WINNER:
St Matthias Anglican Church - 175th Anniversary Celebrations

 

 4. Heritage Snap!

In line with the National Trust Heritage Festival for 2019 this year's theme for Heritage Snap was 'This Place Matters'.

Entrants in each grade based category were encouraged to explore significant heritage buildings and spaces in and around Launceston and photograph the things that make these places special to them. 

 

Judging panellists for this year's Heritage Snap! were:
• Councillor Tim Walker - Journalist and Media advisor
• Ray Foley - National Trust of Tasmania Board member
• Ananda Carins - REIT Board member
• Claudia Taylor - City of Launceston Youth Development Officer
• Fiona Ranson - City of Launceston Heritage Planner

 

GRADE 3-6  (71 entries from 15 entrants)

Commendations:
Jeremiah Billing, 12, Invermay Primary School
James Corbould, 10, Launceston Preparatory School
Isobel Miller, 10, St Thomas More's

WINNERS:
Isobel Miller, 10, St Thomas More's
Annie Howard, 10, Launceston Preparatory School

 

 GRADE 7-10  (15 entries from 6 entrants)

Commendations:
Sanden Cook, 15, Riverside High School
Thomas Page, 12, St Patrick's College

WINNER:
Theo Cook, 13, Riverside High School

 

GRADE 11-12 (5 entries from 2 entrants)

WINNERS:
Phoebe Saunders, 17, St Patrick's College
Alexandra Phillips, 17, Scotch Oakburn College
