Civic Square

Civic Square houses the Town Hall, LINC (Launceston Library), Henty House, Tasmania Police, historic Macquarie House, Japanese Garden, sculptures, and public toilets.

The Launceston Central retail centre is just a block away, providing access to a variety of shopping and dining experiences.

Located nearby is the St John Street bus exchange, and multi-storey car parking in the Paterson Street East and West car parks that offer accessible parking, toilets and parenting facilities (Paterson Street West).

With sheltered areas, bike racks, plenty of seating, and complimentary USB charging stations and power outlets, it's a great place to start exploring what's on offer in the CBD.

The play space outside the library features a fountain with interactive buttons, carvings of Northern Tasmanian fauna and x-ray play features, which are a nod to Launceston's pioneering medical innovations, notably the work of Dr William Russ Pugh and his use of anaesthetic.

You can also explore the best that Launceston and the region has to offer at our Launceston Visitor Information Centre located in the historic post office building near the John Street end of Civic Square.

Gardens and sculptures

Civic Square features a number of sculptures and is landscaped with decorative plantings, including a Japanese Garden.

The Japanese Garden, representing a world in miniature, is a gift to the City of Launceston from Ikea, Launceston's Sister City, to commemorate the 30 year anniversary of the Sister City Relationship. The garden was designed by Mr Osami Kominami, constructed by the City of Launceston under his guidance, and officially opened by Mayor Kaoru Kurata in February 1996.

The sculptures, Rain Forest and Tasmanian Tableau, were sculpted by the late Stephen Walker.

Rain Forest, located near Macquarie House and the Japanese Garden, is a comment by the Artist on man's treatment of the forests. Comprising Huon pine and bronze, the sculpture towers an impressive 4m high.

Tasmanian Tableau, located in a raised landscaped garden bed at the St John Street end of Civic Square, features a family of Thylacines (Tasmanian Tigers), a Wedge-tailed Eagle, and two Pied Currawongs.

The Family of Thylacines (Tasmanian Tigers), sculpted by Dan Kershaw, range from playful pups to adults. These 10 delightful sculptures are located throughout Civic Square. Can you find them all?
