Transport & Road Safety Centre

The Launceston Transport & Road Safety Centre, a valuable asset for the City of Launceston community, holds historical significance, and was originally repurposed from a disused city water reservoir dating back to around 1894. Since its transformation into a Road Safety Centre in 1980, it has become an iconic local venue, hosting generations of children's parties, training days, celebrations, and barbeques over the years.

The final stages of construction for the Transport & Road Safety Centre are set to commence on Wednesday, 13 March 2024.

Following extensive redevelopment and repairs to the underlying structure, the site is now ready for the final internal fit out of the facility to reintroduce it as a modern educational Road Safety Centre.

Recognising the centre's importance to the community, thorough consultation was undertaken regarding any proposed changes. Input from community members, gathered through the Tomorrow Together - Social, Inclusive and Fair City survey, overwhelmingly favoured maintaining the original centre's look and feel while incorporating modern, inclusive equipment. This feedback emphasised the desire for a realistic mini-layout featuring one and two-way roads, traffic lights, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, and updated amenities to cater to the needs of children and young people for years to come.

Zanetto Civil was awarded the Tender in March 2024, having successfully completed the preceding two stages of the project.

The works will involve:

  • Installing playground equipment, furniture, fittings and lighting
  • Constructing fencing, barriers, shelters and structures
  • Undertaking civil works for the car park
  • Landscaping and planting to enhance the surroundings.
